Woman Faces Additional Charges in Hempstead School Assault on Teacher

Annika McKenzie, 34, of Hempstead, allegedly assaulted teacher at Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School in April MINEOLA, N.Y. – Acting Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas announced the indictment of a Hempstead woman on additional charges stemming from an assault on a Hempstead middle school teacher in April. Annika McKenzie, 34, of Hempstead, was arraigned today on the following grand jury charges before Acting Nassau Supreme Court Justice Jerald Carter: • Assault in the 2nd Degree (a D violent felony)
• Two counts of Assault in the 3rd Degree (an A misdemeanor)
• Two counts of Criminal Trespass in the 3rd Degree (a B misdemeanor)
• Harassment in the 2nd Degree (a violation)
• Disorderly Conduct (a violation) Judge Carter continued bail at $7,500 bond or $5,000 cash. McKenzie faces a maximum sentence of to two to seven years in prison. She is due back in court on June 8. “Violence and disregard for the law should not occur inside any school,” Acting DA Singas said. “My office will continue our efforts to ensure that Nassau classrooms remain safe places for students to learn and teachers to instruct in an environment free from violence of any kind.” Acting DA Singas said on April 15 at approximately 1:45 p.m., McKenzie, while at the Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School in Hempstead, physically assaulted a 58-year-old middle school math teacher, causing her to lose consciousness. The defendant, who is the mother of a student at the school, committed this crime while acting in concert with a juvenile, whose case is being handled by the Nassau County Family Court. Assistant District Attorney Rachel Grinspan of Acting DA Singas’ County Court Trial Bureau is prosecuting the case. McKenzie is represented by Don Rollock, Esq. The charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless found guilty.
